Tribute American Made – When Washington Allen, father to Bona Allen, Sr., began tanning leather in Gwinnett County, his methods were simple. He bought his hides from the surrounding farmers by paying them one hide of finished leather for each two raw hides delivered to him. He also traded leather for the bark of trees which grew in the district. He soaked his hides in the water of the river running through his farm, treated them with locally-obtained lime to remove the hair, and then tanned them with ground bark mixed with water in pits. This tanning process could take one year or more to complete. Fats from locally slaughtered cattle were used to make the leather pliable, and iron rust was commonly used as the dye. Bona Allen learned the art of tanning from his father.
Slotin’s Folk Art – Slotin’s puts on the annual Folk Fest, the world’s largest folk art show and sale, hosting more than 90 galleries and dealers (August at the North Atlanta Trade Center). Slotin’s also puts on seasonal auctions.
Buford Weekly Illustrated – Longtime newspaperman Millard Grimes, owner of Athens-based Grimes Publications, recently got back into the newspaper publishing industry with a new weekly paper in Buford. Grimes launched the Buford Weekly Illustrated on Aug. 17, 2011 as a family business with son, Jim Grimes, serving as editor and daughter, Laura Grimes, the paper’s business manager. The free, tabloid-sized paper is putting an emphasis on the city of Buford and its high school and sports scene, Millard Grimes said.
