Disasters

Buford has been plagued with a number of disastrous fires over the years. Most were related to the buildings associated with our leather industry, but unrelated fires occurred over the years as well. Whether it was the late 1890’s fire that destroyed the tannery of Robert H. Allen, the 1981 fire that was described as Gwinnett’s largest disaster when the Bona Allen Tannery and grounds burned, or the most recent fire in February of 2015 that destroyed the last remaining building on those same grounds, the Museum felt it necessary to document each one. Within this exhibit, we have also included other photos of natural disasters from events in Buford.
